This gorgeous pin will be a thing of beauty for a lifetime!
The lily in this stickpin, part of the design of the modern-day Israeli shekel, appeared on coins minted by Jews in Jerusalem in the year 350 BCE. It appeared still earlier in finds from the Davidic Kingdom. The lily was also used as an ornamental motif in the Temple in Jerusalem, decorating the branches of the menorah and the capitals of the two main pillars, Yakhin and Boaz.
A common Jewish symbol up to the destruction of the Second Temple, the trefoil (fleur-de-lis) was later adopted by Christianity, and by Islam as a decorative motif.
This item comes with a certificate of authenticity of the Israel Museum, Jerusalem. Enclosed is a small description of its historical background in English and Hebrew.
