Heart-shaped Silver Amulet-pendant. Eretz-Israel. Early 20th Century

Size: 0.7" X 0.8" / 1.7 X 2.1 cm
Inscribed in Hebrew on the obverse of this amuletic pendant is the world "Shaddai", the Almighty amidst a floral design. On the reverse are the opening words of the verses written in the phylacteries and mezuzot: "Here O Israel the Lord our God the Lord is One" (Deuteronomy 6:4-9).
Amulets were intended to guard their owners' families and property from natural disasters, spells, and evil spirits. Some were used to heal sickess and cure infertility; others were meant to shield the traveler from peril, to promote success and bounty, and even to secure the affection of friends and lovers.
