This piece was inspired by a bronze decoration depicting the top of a standart used by the Tenth Roman Legion. The Tenth Legion was the main Roman force involved in the battles against the jewish rebellions.

Engraved in the center of the original piece is an eagle, surrounded by the inscription LG X FR FEL, which marks the Tenth Legion. This object was attached to the leather battle-dress of a commander or put to other use by the cavalry.

The shards of glass inlaid in this piece originate from fragments of glass vessels created between the 1st and 6th Century C.E, discovered in Israel in the vicinity of the Mediterranean Sea shore.

This item comes with a certificate of authenticity of the Israel Museum, Jerusalem. Enclosed is a small description of its historical background in English and Hebrew.
