Understanding the Jewish World tells of the Jews' history between the 2nd - 5th centuries, from Roman rule through the Byzantine period. Following the Bar Kochba revolt and subsequent Roman tyranny of Judea, the Temple was destroyed and the epicenter of Jewish religious practice moved from Jerusalem to Tiberius. The depleted Jewish population experienced a resurgence, creating space for generations of lawmakers and commentators to canonize the oral law. This book details the political and religious migration of Jewish communities through the Roman and Byzantine eras, as well as the dispersion of Jews through the Diaspora, and offers a unique insight into how the Jewish world came to be.

Born in Austria, Michael Avi-Yonah was an Israeli archaeologist and historian most famous for his excavation projects in the Gaza region and around Jerusalem. He was a professor of archaeology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
