Man Ray - Human Equations

Edited by Wendy A. Grossman and Edouard Sebline

Curators: Adina Kamien-Kazhdan, Wendy A. Grossman, Andrew Strauss and Edouard Sebline

A “transatlantic journey from mathematics to Shakespeare,” this publication takes Man Ray’s Shakespearan Equations paintings, dating mostly from the late 1940s, as the foundation for an exploration of his creative process. For the first time, a core group of the enigmatic paintings has been united with their inspiration - mathematical models Man Ray encountered and photographed in Paris in the 1930s. This creative triangle was placed in context with other paintings, photographs, and objects in a collaborative exhibition co-organized by The Israel Museum, Jerusalem, and The Phillips Collection, Washington, DC.

The book published in conjunction with the exhibition contains scholarly essays by the exhibition’s curators as well as by experts in art history and theory, English literature and Shakespeare studies, and mathematics. A wealth of images reveals the ease with which Man Ray, innovator and inveterate experimenter, moved between a variety of artistic disciplines to forge his own path.
