Around the Star of David are the initial letters of the Biblical verse Ben Porat Yosef, Ben Porat Alei Ayin ("A fruitful son is Yosef (Joseph), a fruitful son by a spring.") (Genesis 49:22).  This verse is said to protect from the evil eye, and is suitable for men and women.

According to a kabbalistic tradition, the five metals must be combined on the Saturday night after a full moon, when Jupiter's influence is felt.
