This beautiful Kiddush cup is decorated with a unique pattern.

The original cup was made of engraved and partly gilt silver. Inscribed along its rim is a verse recited as part of the morning Kiddush (blessing over wine) on the three pilgrim festivals and on Rosh Hashanah: “So Moses declared to the Israelites the set times of the Lord” (Leviticus 23:44). The cup is adorned with decorative motifs, four of them illustrating the holidays: two figures blow a shofar for Rosh Hashanah; a man holds a lulav and an etrog under the word sukkot; four people sit around a banquet table on which the Passover lamb is set; and Moses holds the Tables of Law, symbolizing Shavuot and the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai.

The cup was made in Narva, which lay at the crossroads between Russia, northeastern Europe, and the Ottoman Empire. While its form resembles that of German goblets from that period, its decorations are similar to those seen on Russian cups. Since there were no Jews in Narva, it is possible that the cup was commissioned by a Jewish merchant passing through the city – renowned for the exquisite work of its silversmiths – and was engraved somewhere else at a later stage.

This item comes with a certificate of authenticity of the Israel Museum, Jerusalem. Enclosed is a small description of its historical background in English and Hebrew.
