In 2009, the Israel Museum's collections were greatly enriched through the gift of the artistic estate of Jakob Steinhardt. This gift initiated generously by Steinhardt's family, complements and supplements our existing holding of Steinhardt's work, yielding an unparalleled concentration in prints by a master printmaker, as well as early works, drawings, paintings, illustrated books, and documentary archival material. With this rich and representative holding, the museum now becomes an important repository for the work of Jakob Steinhardt, an artist whose oeuvre chronicles the events of a turbulent century.

In Europe, Steinhardt, depicted his rural youth in Germany, his experiences on the eastern front as a soldier in World War I, and life in Berlin, where he achieved recognition as an Expressionist artist. With the rise of the Nazis, his Zionist enthusiasm took him to Jerusalem in Palestine, where he played a prominent role in the culture circle that the new German-speaking immigrants had formed there. He continued his own work as an artist throughout his lifetime, while also teaching generations of students, ultimately becoming director of the Bezalel School.
