Does Everyone Wear a Tallit at a Wedding?

In Sephardic communities, not only is a tallit worn by the groom, but also four (preferably tall) friends may hold up a tallit over the couple, with a similar purpose to the chuppah. Likewise, some people may hold a tallit over the couple during the sheva brachot after the meal. Even if he has been wearing a tallit since Bar Mitzvah, it is nice to get one that will be special for a wedding, and new and clean in front of all the guests.

Historically, in Ashkenazi communities the man wears a kittel and not a tallit at his wedding, more akin to a an intricately embroidered robe, and does not have his friends hold the tallit over the couple at any point in the wedding. However, since an Ashkenazi man does not traditionally wear a tallit to pray in the mornings until he is married, it is traditional that his bride will gift him the tallit that he will put on from then onwards.

In less traditional communities, there may be some combination of these customs, where the groom wears a tallit only for the chuppah for example. No matter what, the tallit has become a central item for a Jewish wedding across the Jewish spectrum.
