The different plants – which also include willow, myrtle and date palm – represent different types of Jew, and they are waved in six different directions to symbolize God’s omnipresence. The etrog is known as pri etz hadar – the fruit of a beautiful tree – and people search out the most beautiful fruit available to use for this mitzvah.
