Nahum Gutman

Romania-born Nahum Gutman immigrated to Israel in 1905, where he studied art at the Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem. He soon rebelled against the traditional teaching methods and plowed ahead alone to create his own distinctive style. His art depicts the exotic, hidden Middle East, and won him worldwide acclaim. Gutman was also a celebrated children’s author and illustrator; he even won the Israel Prize for Children’s Literature! His work is displayed in the eponymous Gutman Museum in Tel Aviv.
