Colored in resplendent jewel tones and embossed with real gold, this extraordinary work of art is as unusual as it is beautiful. The background shows the iconic Lion's gate in Jerusalem, which enters onto the Temple Mount and holds great significance in Christianity. The eponymous lions can be seen at the very top of the serigraph. The shofar (an unstrument made from horn blown of Rosh Hashanah) hovers over the gate; beneath this lie calligraphed sections resembling the cover for an "Aron Kodesh" (literally Holy Cupboard; the place in synagogue where Torah scrolls are stored) and an extract from a torn, singed Torah scroll. The texture-finished red base has been beautifully embossed with gold lettering, and abstract shapes resembling people flooding the gate.
Born to a Rabbinic family in 1909, Moshe Castel was accepted into the Bezalel Art School aged just 13. After four years he moved to Paris, where he worked and studied for 13 years before returning to Israel and the mystical holy city of Safed in Northern Israel. His vibrant work uses unusual media to create exceptional pieces depicting Bible stories, Sephardic culture and life in Israel. His work is displayed in several prominent Israeli institutions, including the Knesset (Israel’s parliament), the Rockerfeller Center in New York, and the President’s home in Jerusalem.
